Sunrise Nursery

Management and Room Supervisors will daily ensure that the nursery and each individual room is safe and secure.  Doors leading out of rooms used by children will all have high handles and will be kept closed at all times.  The three external doors to our Nursery will be kept locked at all times. Parents can only access each room from the outside by ringing the bell and by staff opening the door to them.  We will not use coded or fingerprint entry systems into the Nursery as we prefer to welcome parents and children as they arrive. Staff must also see each parent out again and ensure that the external doors are closed behind each parent.  Visitors will be asked to stay outside until management is available to escort them around the nursery.

If a member of staff becomes aware that a child is missing from their room or playground, the Managing Director and the Manager must be told immediately, by mobile phone if necessary.  The Manager will search the area and telephone the police if the child is not found.  The staff must act in such a way as to reassure the other children.  The remaining children must be returned to Sunrise Nursery as soon as possible. Staff must not panic and must think clearly.

Whenever a child or children leave Sunrise Nursery, staff must count them out and count them back in again.  If leaving the nursery by car a daily register must be taken and the supervisor must be responsible for returning all the children.

When taking walks on the Millennium Green staff must take a photocopy of the daily registers with them.  Each member of staff will be responsible for their own part of the register.  The children must be divided up in the same number of groups as there are staff and specific staff must be responsible for specific children. Eg the first group will be the first x number of named children on the register, the second group the second x number of named children and the third group the final named children.  Staff must continually be aware of how many children are in their care and they must be counted back into nursery.  Staff must count the named children before leaving, take a written note of the number, count the named children generally whilst out, and count the named children before returning.

Staff must never take children out on their own.*

Staff must always carry a charged mobile phone when children are in their care away from nursery premises. This includes the main Toddler playground.

* An exception may be made for the After School Club and Holiday Club when walking on the Millennium Green and the Football Field, as long as all children are over 5 years old and there are no more than 6 children in the group.  A mobile phone must be taken.

Ofsted must be informed if a child is lost or goes missing.
