Sunrise Nursery

The pre-school is more structured than the toddler room due to your child’s development, but we still encourage play based learning and child choice.  All our staff encourage children to be confident and independent and we build, challenge and extend all the skills your child has already developed. There is a group time every morning which can include show and tell, the day, date and weather, chatting, stories, singing and circle games as well as responding to the daily register.

We keep written and visual records of observations of your child and their profile is kept up to date by their key person.

Experiences and activities in Pre School are planned using our observations of the children as well as seasonal celebrations and festivals.  They interlink with the EYFS and every day we focus on the 6 areas of learning through different methods of play based activities and experiences.  These include:

Construction play: We have a large range of construction equipment such as building blocks, stickle bricks, duplo, lego, playdough, junk modelling, cogs and recycled materials.  This type of play helps to develop fine and gross motor skills.  Children can express themselves creatively and communicate their ideas through designing and constructing, as well as exploring shape, space and form in two and three dimensions.

Animal Edutainment: Once a term we have a visit from Animal Edutainment. These workshops allow the pre school children to see, touch and even hold a variety of reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and mammals.  The children are taught about different habitats and dietary requirements as well as an enthusiasm for all living things.

Music and Movement: We listen to wide variety of music from around the world - from classical, folk, instrumental and jazz to pop and rock.  Sometimes the children sing along, dance freely, just listen or use instruments to accompany the music.

We keep our back door open for most of the day and we take our learning activities outside whenever possible. When the weather allows we have our snacks and lunch outside. We have a large covered outside classroom which shelters the children from both the sun and the rain.  We encourage the children to play outside and experience the seasons in all weathers.  We provide ‘Muddy Puddle’ trousers and coats, umbrellas and suncream for added protection when needed.  In our lovely large garden we have climbing and balancing equipment as well as a small hill to roll down, a pirate ship and a wild area for insects and birds. We love to play with water, sand, bikes and ‘building things’ and we have some fabulous resources to keep the children’s imagination alive and enquiring. We also love to go out onto the Millennium Green for sensory walks, parachute games, obstacle course, picnics or just for the fun of being outside.

When your child is settled into Pre School they will have the opportunity to take part in a ‘Forest School Day’.  We take the children to the woods on the Millennium Green where they first spend morning sessions, building up to a whole day outside experiencing nature.  They gain valuable experiences whilst adapting their play to a different environment.  As well as climbing trees, digging, building dens and hunting for bugs they use resources such as wood, rope, binoculars and magnifying glasses.  The children help to make their own lunch and transport the equipment to the woods.  They enjoy eating their snack and lunch beneath the trees –  jacket potatoes with cheese and ham straight from the tin foil is a firm favourite!
